Fluoride Treatment
Strengthen your enamel and shield your smile against decay with professional fluoride treatments for all ages.
Nature’s Cavity Fighter: Proactive Protection for Your Teeth
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that plays a vital role in preventive dentistry by making your teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause cavities. At Whitestone Dental, Dr. Timothy Matthews provides professional-strength fluoride treatments that go far beyond what over-the-counter toothpastes can offer. This quick and painless procedure involves applying a highly concentrated fluoride varnish, gel, or foam directly to the surfaces of your teeth. The mineral is then absorbed into the enamel, reinforcing its structure and even helping to repair microscopic areas of early decay before they turn into permanent cavities.

Fluoride Treatment
Powerful Enamel Remineralization
Fluoride works by attracting essential minerals like calcium and phosphate back into the tooth surface, effectively "rebuilding" weakened areas of the enamel.
Reversal of Early Decay
In many cases, professional fluoride can actually halt and reverse the very first signs of demineralization, preventing the need for future fillings or dental work.
Relief for Sensitive Teeth
By reinforcing the protective outer layer of your teeth, fluoride helps seal the microscopic pathways to the nerves, providing significant relief from temperature sensitivity.
Long-Term Cost Savings
Investing in regular fluoride treatments is a cost-effective strategy that significantly reduces the risk of complex dental issues and expensive restorative procedures later.

While it is crucial for developing young smiles, fluoride is highly beneficial for adults too. It protects exposed roots, reinforces aging enamel, and provides extra security for those with dry mouth or existing dental work.
After your cleaning, Dr. Matthews or a hygienist will apply the fluoride as a varnish, gel, or foam. Varnish is painted on with a small brush and sets instantly, while gels and foams are usually applied using comfortable trays.
If you receive fluoride varnish, you can typically eat and drink right away, but you should avoid hot liquids, crunchy foods, and brushing/flossing for 4 to 6 hours to allow for maximum absorption.
For most patients, we recommend a fluoride treatment every six months during your routine cleaning. However, if you are at a higher risk for cavities, Dr. Matthews may suggest treatments every 3 to 4 months.
Absolutely. Professional fluoride applications are FDA-approved and involve a safe, controlled amount of the mineral. It is a non-invasive procedure that provides massive protective benefits with virtually no risk.
